Craobh Club AIB – Cluiche Ceannais Iomána na Mumhan – Croisín V Na Piarsaigh ( BEO TG4 @ 13.30)
Crusheen go in to this Munster Final off the back of an easy win over Carrigtwohill. The main thing they will have learned from the victory is how strong a defensive unit they have. Despite facing in to a strong wind in the first half they only conceded eight points. This defensive unit is built around the Dillon brothers and O’ Doherty at number five. They are all big strong men who will give nothing away easy. While they have no house hold names like Clare county champions of the past, they will feel the experience they have gained from playing in last years Munster championship will stand to them. The omens aren’t good though, since 2000 only two Clare sides Sixmilebridge (2002) and Tulla (2007) have qualified for the final, both falling at the final hurdle. If Crusheen are to make it third time lucky for Clare sides they will have to stop the supply of ball in to Dowling and hope the likes of Meaney and Kennedy can get some scores at the other end.
Na Piarsaigh are just the 4th Limerick club to qualify for the Munster Club Senior Hurling Final since 1994. This in its self means there is no real pressure on the men from the Treaty county. Having won their first ever county title in October everything from here on in is a bonus. They are a young team with more than half of them still U21 — Kevin Downes, Shane Dowling, Pat Gleeson, James O’Brien, Alan Dempsey, Kieran Kennedy, Adrian Breen were all on the Limerick U21 panel this year. Shane Dowling has really come to the fore this year. His 2-04 in the win over Ballygunner is the main reason they find themselves in the final. A lot is also expected from Downes who had a good year with Limerick Seniors but he was very quite last time out. This may be down to the fact he had the flu coming in the to the match but he will need to be on top form on Sunday.
As with all young teams putting back to back performances together can be difficult. However if the occasion doesn’t get the better of them Na Piarsaigh have the players to win this game.
On the other hand Crusheen have a bit more “toughness” than their young opponents and if it is close going in to the last 10 minutes that should be enough to get them through.
Craobh Club AIB – Cluiche Ceannais Iomána Laighean – Abhallort-An Bealach V Cúl Doire
Coolderry are a team that gets goals they have scored 16 so far in the championship. In fact the only game they didn’t score one was the only game they lost this year against Birr. More goals will be needed if they are to over come favourites Oulart-the-Ballagh on Sunday. They beat a fancied Ballyboden St. Endas in the semi final by 6 points thanks to some excellent free taking from Damien Murray (0-08). Brian Carroll is probably their most high profile player but he let the semi final pass him by and if the same things happens the number 10 on Sunday Coolderry will be in trouble. Manager Ken Hogan has been playing doing his sides chances, but they must feel with the Kilkenny champions knocked out they have a great chance of winning their first ever Leinster title.
If Coolderry’s 16 goal haul is impressive then Oulart’s twenty three is outstanding. Granted six of them did come against a poor St. Anne’s side in the county championship but it still makes impressive reading. The two they got in the win over James Stephens proved crucial as they collapsed in the last ten minutes of the game and if it wasn’t for those goals they would have lost. A similar capitulation on Sunday will see them out of the Championship. Oulart and now Wexford manager Liam Dunne is a real character when the GAA Blog spoke to him before the James Stephen’s match he joked they were thinking of not turning up
“We are not going!! – Sure what business have we going up to play a Kilkenny team in Nolan Park!!”
After they won their last two county finals he had them out training the next morning, this year he gave them the day off. So he is either after learning from past last years mistakes or is getting soft. Having seen the man play I’d wager the former just ask Gary Kirby.
Oulart-the-Ballagh should have enough to take this one and claim their first ever Leinster title.
