LAOCHRA GAEL – Clár 1 Eddie BrennanEddie Brennan Galway v Kilkenny - Leinster GAA Hurling Senior Championship Final

Lá Vailintín 14ú Feabhra 2013 TG4 @ 20:00

Bhuaigh Eddie Brennan ocht mbonn sinsir Uile Éireann Iomána le Cill Chainnigh idir na blianta 2000 agus 2011, agus é mar chrá croí ag cosantóirí agus ag cúlbáirí ó cheann ceann na tíre. Agus é éirithe as an iomáint idirchontae anois, insíonn sé a scéal féin dúinn.

Thóg sé tamall air aon dul chun cinn a dhéanamh agus níor imir sé iomáint fé 18 le Cill Chainnigh. Bhuaigh sé a chéad bhonn Uile Éireann leis an bhfoireann fé 21 i 1999 agus insíon sé dúinn faoi cé chomh diongbháilte is a bhí sé a gheansaí a choimeád an lá úd! Deir sé linn chomh maith faoin gceacht crua a fuair sé ar a chead lá craoibhe sinsir in aghaidh Átha Cliath. Tá cur síos mion aige ar na laethanta maithe agus ar na droch laethanta – cé nach raibh mórán díobh sin ann! – le Cill Chainnigh, agus faoin slí go mb’éigean dó a chuid imeartha a athrú ar mhaithe na fóirne chun a áit a choimeád ar an bhfoireann. Chomh maith le Eddie féin, labhraíonn Michael Kavanagh, Donal O’Grady, agus Diarmuid Lyng.

Eddie Brennan won eight senior All-Ireland medals with his native Kilkenny between the years 2000 and 2011, and he terrorised defenders and goalkeepers throughout the country with his penchant for goalscoring.

Following his recent retirement from intercounty hurling, he shares his life story with us here. He was a late developer and didn’t represent Kilkenny at minor level but he won an under 21 All-Ireland medal in 1999, a day where he refused point blank to part with his jersey afterwards despite a serious injury.

He recalls his rude introduction to senior championship hurling against Dublin. He describes in detail the good days and bad days- far and few between! – in the Kilkenny jersey and how he had to alter his playing style and tactics in order to maintain his place on the team. As well as Eddie himself, there are contributions from Michael Kavanagh, Donal O’Grady, and Diarmuid Lyng.

(The Laochra Gael – ‘Eddie Brennan’ programme will be repeated on  Sunday afternoon 17th February at 4.20pm on TG4.)

Laochra Gael is produced by Nemeton TV, based in An Rinn, Co Waterford.

Allianz Hurling League Final Preview

The final weekend of the Allianz hurling league is here, with seven of the eight division one teams still with something to play for. Kilkenny, Tipperary, Waterford, Galway and Dublin all have a chance of making the final. While at the other end of the table both Offaly and Wexford, know one of them will be playing division two hurling next year.

Cork are the only team with nothing to play for as they lie in the no-mans land other wise known as mid-table.

Cork V Dublin (live on TG4 on Sunday from 2.00)

Even though Cork can’t reach the final the Rebels will not want to be beaten at home especially by the high flying Dubs. Denis Walsh has used 31 players so far in the league and all will be hoping to start come the 29th of May when they face All-Ireland Champions Tipperary. Cork have yet to be beaten at home in this years league, beating Offaly and Galway before drawing with Tipperary after hitting the post in the last minute. Cork people will not be worried by the surprise defeat to Wexford last week as they will feel it is much too early in the year to be firing on all cylinders. Luke O’ Farrell may be one man to watch, the 21 year old Midleton man has only played in three games but has score an impressive 1-05, it is for players like him that this game holds most significance.

Win or lose on Sunday and Dublin will still have had a fantastic year. Having been quoted at 80-1 to win the competition in February they find them selves just 70 minutes away from the final. Unlike in previous years Dublin are not just relying on Dotsy O’Callaghan to score, but in saying that he still has scored 4-4 in the fives games he has played. However it is the likes of Ryan O’Dwyer (2-11), Paul Ryan(1-05 in the draw with Kilkenny) and Conal Keaney(0-41) that have made the difference this year.

Dublin may have peeked too early may fade as the other teams come back to full fitness, but if the bandwagon gathers more speed over the coming months its going to be very hard to stop it.

This game has far more significance to the blues and it is for that reason that they get the nod.
